چکیده

We discuss the technical viability of transporting real-time voice over IP networks when the output rate of the speech encoder is adjusted to match the characteristics of the network: speech is coded at low bit rates when the network is congested; at higher bit rates, otherwise. First, issues affecting perceptual QoS are analyzed. The rationale for Adaptive Voice over IP (AVoIP) is explained and possible architectures described. The problem of estimating the state of the network is then discussed. A rate control algorithm is introduced. Finally, measurements of AVoIP performance over the Internet are presented. Adaptive voice over IP solutions allow more efficient use of network resources, offer the operator greater flexibility and pave the way for new services.

A simulation study of adaptive voice communications on IP networks

This paper presents simulation results outlining the behavior of rate-adaptive voice communications over IP networks. In the considered architecture, voice coders adapt their rate to the current state of the network, so as to generate only the bandwidth that the network is capable of carrying. An algorithm is proposed for driving the transmission rate of voice sources on the basis of estimation...

Prototype of an Adaptive Voice Coder for IP Telephony

Purpose of this paper is to describe the theoretical basis, design and implementation of a communication system based on an adaptive voice coder tuned for IP real-time voice communications. The developed voice coder makes use of an adaptive algorithm which performs an automatic coding switch, according to the evolving congestion conditions of the underlying IP network, in order to render the co...

Performance Evaluation of an IP Voice Terminal

This paper examines the issues related to the transmission of voice over packet networks using the Internet Protocol (IP). We focus on studying the delays that are generated in the terminal, which is a Unix workstation equipped with IP voice application software. Delay components in the terminal are presented. We measure the processing delays in the terminal using different audio codecs and mea...

ASPF: An Adaptive anti-SPIT Policy-based Framework

SPam over Internet Telephony (SPIT) is a rising IP voice telephony threat. Voice over IP enables the transmission of telephone calls over the Internet, as opposed to plain old telephone service. Internet Telephony essentially means low-cost phone calls, i.e. a clear benefit for both consumers and businesses, which may also lead to cheap methods of mass advertising. Still, industry observers war...
